Karishma Mehta, the founder of ‘Humans of Bombay’, founded the organisation as a Facebook Page in 2014. Karishma has been making headlines ever since her Copyright infringement case against ‘People of India’ backfired. But who is she? Let’s find out.
Karishma is a writer and photographer. Not just a founder, but she is also an author of the book called Humans of Bombay. Karishma started the page when she was just 21 years old. HOB is an Indian photoblog website which comprises the most wholesome stories about Mumbaikars (people residing in Mumbai). The popularity of all digital platforms of Humans of Bombay remains uncontested. It covers a mixed bag of stories that best emulate the spirit of the city.
Karishma’s book came as an attempt to raise funds to support the website. For the book, she compiled all the posts, including some which were not even published online.
In 2022, she started a YouTube video series called “How The Hell Did I Do It?”. The series is based on interviews and involves successful businesses and famous personalities. All the guests address questions as to how they did it, meaning, how they made it in life.
Mehta has been a subject of trolls every now and then. Sometimes it is for her ‘privilege’ and other times it is for her ‘struggles.’
The recent controversy started when the organisation filed a lawsuit in the Delhi High Court against an online storytelling portal ‘People of India’ for copyright infringement. A little while after that Humans of New York founder Brandon Stanton took to ‘X’ and shared his opinion on India-based storytelling. He accused them of copying his idea of Humans of New York. Also, he criticised the company for filing a lawsuit against another storytelling platform. Brandon’s statement did not only bring in criticism for the organisation but it was also accompanied by trolls.
Many people called our Karishma for promoting a toxic workspace environment.

Amid all the chaos, an old video went viral and it showed Karishma talking about her organisation. In the video, the founder elaborated on how the idea of HOB came completely ‘out of blue’ and it just clicked for her. This invited further trolling. “Completely randomly and out of the blue, I stumbled upon the idea of Humans of Bombay and I started it. And it clicked. That period was a high of its own to start something new,” she says.
