After several twists and turns, the Punjab drama may finally see a closure soon. As Navjot Singh Sidhu’s meeting with Rahul Gandhi ended, state Congress in-charge Harish Rawat announced that Sidhu’s resignation issue was resolved and he would continue as Punjab Congress Committee chief.
According to sources, the day-long meetings were held between party’s top leadership and Sidhu, including a video conference with Priyanka Gandhi. The PCC chief was reportedly asked to avoid public spats with the state government and engage in strengthening the party. Sidhu was reassured that a coordination committee would be formally set up for better synergy between the party and the state.
Having played the Dalit card, Gandhis favouring CM Channi, who is now emerging on his own, cannot be overlooked. At the same time, appointment of of the new Punjab Police chief and the advocate general has given fodder to the opposition. This point was raised by Sidhu before the Gandhis.
With ex-CM Amarinder Singh campaigning against the party, the Gandhis are said to believe that Sidhu is the one who can effectively fight against Amarinder. So it might be difficult for the Congress to ignore Sidhu.
During the meeting with Venugopal and Rawat, the Punjab Congress leader raised his concerns over the 18-point agenda taken by the leadership on which actions are pending. These include action against those involved in the sacrilege issue and the drugs mafia.
