'Don't Know What Was Going on Inside his Head': Sourav Ganguly On Angelo Mathews Timed-Out Controversy
Shakib faced severe criticism for not withdrawing his appeal against Mathews. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is the latest to join the bandwagon.

Sri Lanka cricketer Angelo Mathews’ timed-out dismissal against Bangladesh in the World Cup fixture in Delhi became a big talking point earlier this week. The veteran Lankan all-rounder became the first international player to be adjudged timed-out in the history of international cricket.

Before Mathews could take the strike, his helmet strap got broken. As he looked to get his helmet replaced, Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a timed-out dismissal. The umpires consulted the Bangladesh captain multiple times if he wanted to withdraw the appeal but he refused and Mathews had to walk off.

Shakib faced severe criticism for not withdrawing his appeal against Mathews. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is the latest to join the bandwagon. Speaking with Kolkata TV, he said, “He [Shakib Al Hasan] should not have done that. There was nothing which needed a time-out. I don’t know what was going on inside his head. Must be the spur of the moment."

The controversial timed-out dismissal took place in the 25th over of the game after Angelo Mathews came down to bat following Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal. But Mathews became a victim of an unfortunate incident and had to return to the dressing room without even facing a delivery. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan later revealed what exactly unfolded during the World Cup fixture.

“One of our fielders came to me and said, if you appeal, the law says he’s out because he hasn’t taken his guard within the time frame. So, then I appealed to the umpires, who asked me If I was going to call him back or not. I said I won’t call him back," Shakib had said in the post-match press conference.

The World Cup tie, eventually, went in favour of Bangladesh. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted 279 runs. Charith Asalanka scored a fabulous century to guide Sri Lanka to a defendable total.

Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto, during the run chase, came up with a solid knock of 90 to help his side score the winning runs with 53 balls to spare. Shanto was well-supported by skipper Shakib Al Hasan who pulled off a commendable innings of 82. Shakib was named Player of the Match for his terrific all-round display. Earlier, he had picked up two wickets conceding 57 runs in his 10 overs.
