Gujarat Titans roped in batter Kane Williamson for Rs 2 crore during the IPL mini auction held in December in Kochi. Journalist Chetan Narula backed the franchise’s decision and said that Williamson can partner with Shubman Gill at the top-order.
“Something major has happened. Gujarat Titans have their opening batter in Kane Williamson for just Rs 2 Cr. We were having a discussion that they need an opening batter to partner with Shubman Gill. That’s the spot they are looking for,” he said on CricketNext.

“At number three and number four, GT have power-hitters coming in so he (Williamson) opens with Shubman Gill and holds one end together while Gill can go gaga at the other end,” he added.
Williamson had earlier been a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad side who released him ahead of the mini auction. The right-handed batter was then roped in by GT at his base price.
In 76 IPL matches that the New Zealand batter has played, he has notched up over 2100 runs at a strike rate of 126.03 and has 18 fifties to his name.
Williamson made his IPL debut back in 2015 but only played two matches then while had a brilliant time with the bat in 2018 edition where he scored 735 runs at an impressive average of 52.50, including eight fifties in 17 matches.
GT will begin the 2023 campaign as the defending champions. The Hardik Pandya-led side lifted the trophy in 2022 which was also their debut season.
