Tamasha, directed by Imtiaz Ali, hit the big screens in 2015, emerged to be one of those rare Bollywood movies whose audience response was polar opposite. While some deemed it a “masterpiece”, many called its concept “intoxicating.” The plot of Tamasha revolves around the need to escape from the pressures of adulthood by reconnecting with one’s childhood dream.
During a Film Companion interview, Imtiaz Ali was asked about whether Ved Vardhan Sahni’s character (portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor) in Tamasha had bipolar disorder. In reply, the filmmaker said that as a film director, he is not equipped to offer a diagnosis. “As a film director, I am not capable of providing anyone with the text. There are other psychiatrists who would be doing this job,” he said.
He went on to explain that through Tamasha, his intention was to tell a love story that evokes specific emotions, saying, “I am not qualified even to say what falls under which category of mental health illness. But, being a human being of a certain type, I can bring you stories of love and make you feel in a certain way. Maybe you can associate with them, and perhaps a small percentage of people can feel that love that fills your heart and makes you feel more comfortable in life.”
Released in 2015, Tamasha is a romantic drama film written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone as the lead characters. The narrative unfolds Ved’s life journey across various stages as he meets Tara in Corsica. While the film received a predominantly mixed to positive critical reception during its initial release, it achieved a cult status in the subsequent years despite its box-office underperformance. Ranbir and Deepika’s performances, the film’s soundtrack, and its visuals garnered a lot of acclaim.
