Animal: Karan Johar Talks About Gender Politics, Says 'You Have Someone Like Sandeep Reddy Vanga...'

Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal has created a lot of buzz among the audience. Though the film has been ruling the box office, but it has not escaped from criticism. The film has been accused of glorifying misogyny and toxic masculinity by several social media users. Well, acknowledging the same, Karan Johar in a recent interview talked about gender politics and tagged Animal Director Sandeep Reddy Vanda’s remark.

Speaking at the Director’s Adda for Film Companion, Karan Johar opened up about the topic of gender politics and said, “The gender politics of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I understand, is incorrect as opposed to the gender politics of Rocky Aur Rani. Because now I have evolved, now I have understood.” He further said, “Then you have someone like Sandeep Reddy Vanga telling you that why are you listening to anybody? Just do your own thing! I feel like you got to understand that with age comes evolution. Being a parent specifically, parent of twins, a boy and a girl… you understand how important gender politics are. You don’t want to make those mistakes. You don’t want to tell your children that you wear pink hoodie and you wear blue. Its okay for both of them to wear pink and blue. Also, you don’t tell the boy that don’t cry like a girl.”

About Animal:

Animal revolves around a man and his toxic relationship with his father. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film shows Vijay (played by Ranbir) as an anti-hero who would go to any lengths to protect his father, including gun down 200 people with machine gun. However, despite his efforts, he struggles to get a seal of approval from his emotionally unavailable father (played by Anil Kapoor). His unhealthy relationship with his father impacts his relationship with his wife (played by Rashmika Mandanna).

On Friday, Animal recorded a box office collection of Rs 22.95 crore whereas on Saturday, the collections rose upto Rs 37 crore. This hints that the film could record a high collection on Sunday as well, swiftly helping the film surpass the Rs 400 crore mark. With this, Animal has become the fourth biggest films of 2023.
