On October 16, Bollywood’s ‘Dream Girl’ Hema Malini rang in her 76th birthday. The actress, who is currently active in politics, has delivered many successful films in Bollywood. She has been vowing the audience and capturing hearts ever since she marked her debut with Sapno Ka Saudagar in 1968. She ruled the box office in the ’70s and ’80s and was paired with many successful actors, one of them being Dharmendra, with whom she tied the knot. Her enigmatic personality led to directors wanting to sign her up for their films. Did you know that she once ousted one of her Sholay co-stars from a film?
Reportedly, Sanjeev Kumar was head over heels in love with Hema Malini and even proposed her marriage. He was unaware of the relationship between her and Dharmendra. The trio were seen together in Ramesh Sippy’s film, and would have starred in another film had Hema Malini not gotten Sanjeev Kumar out of the film.
Dulal Guha was making Dost, which was released in 1974. The film starred Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha. Both the actors were appreciated for their excellent performance. But Shatrughan Sinha was not the first choice of the makers. Sanjeev Kumar was first approached for the film. Reportedly, Sanjeev Kumar, unaware of Hema Malini’s love life, proposed to her for marriage. The actress had rejected the proposal and she did not want to work with him and Dharmendra in the same film. On her request, the makers reportedly replaced Sanjeev Kumar with Shatrughan Sinha.
Dost was bankrolled by Premji and was directed by Dulal Guha. It starred Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Asit Sen and Rehman. Amitabh Bachchan made a guest appearance. The film’s music was handled by the famous musical duo, Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Hema Malini married Dharmendra in 1980. The Phool Aur Patthar star was already married to Prakash Kaur with whom he had two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. With the Dream Girl, he had two children, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.
