After a long hiatus, acclaimed director Jeff Nichols is back with his upcoming film, The Bikeriders with stars like Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer and Michael Shannon in key roles. Scheduled for release in June this year, the movie is set in the 1960s during the time when bike culture was gaining momentum amid rebellion. It is based on Danny Lyon’s book about the Vandals Motorcycle Club. Actor Tom Hardy, who plays the enigmatic Johnny, founder of the club, recently opened up about the film.
Speaking to ComicBook, the actor shared that he wishes the audience to enjoy the film and understand the characters of the biker community.
“I am not really hoping anything, but just that people enjoy the film. It is a really cool film and has lots to talk about. If you enjoy watching films, then I think this one will be interesting. Oftentimes, bikers are perceived as a certain thing in the same way that people who have cauliflowers and broken noses and do jiujitsu can be seen as something,” he said, further explaining that people often don’t get to see the community, the heart, the vulnerability, the softness and the generosity of those.
“Something that you don’t want to be a part of turns out to be exactly where you might belong, and you might pass it over if you didn’t look a little closer. Then there’s the criminal element, too. Maybe that’s not for you or me, but there are elements to this that are for all of us. Sometimes we can pass over something because of what it looks like, and you’re not really tapping the surface,” he added.
More About The Bikeriders
Nichols’ latest, The Bikeriders, is based on Danny Lyon’s 1068 book of the same name. According to the official synopsis, the film captures a rebellious time in America when the culture and people were changing.
“After a chance encounter at a local bar, strong-willed Kathy (Jodie Comer) is inextricably drawn to Benny (Austin Butler), the newest member of the Midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals, led by the enigmatic Johnny (Tom Hardy). Much like the country around it, the club begins to evolve, transforming from a gathering place for local outsiders into a dangerous underworld of violence, forcing Benny to choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club,” it adds.
The film is set to hit theatres on June 21.
