Lionsgate has released the official trailer for Small Things Like These and confirmed the release dates for the UK, Ireland and the US. With Oscar winner Cillian Murphy leading the cast, Small Things Like These made its debut at the Berlin Film Festival back in February. It marked a milestone as the first Irish film to do so. Emily Watson earned the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for her role in the film. With the film gearing up for a theatrical release soon, its 2-minute 9-second trailer has left viewers excited and heartbroken at the same time.
In the trailer, Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy plays Furlong, who discovers the horrific abuses happening in a local convent. The line in the video, “You want to watch what you say, about what’s there," is a cautionary statement to Furlong, hinting at the haunting plot. As the trailer continues, it becomes evident that darker secrets and abuse are lurking within the convent, leaving Furlong deeply troubled.
Murphy’s character is shaken to his core after witnessing something deeply disturbing during one of his usual coal deliveries to the convent. A young girl is seen trying to resist going inside, crying and pleading with her mother, who forces her to enter. “Mommy, please! Stop it! No, please! I’m not going in there," the girl screams. Furlong stands by, silent and unsure of how to intervene. This haunting scene leaves him grappling with his conscience, uncertain of what action to take.
Throughout the trailer, Furlong is warned to keep quiet about what he has witnessed. The question lingers: can he stay silent and live with what he knows?

As per its official description, the film is an adaptation of Claire Keegan’s best-selling novel, also titled Small Things Like These. It tells the story of Bill Furlong, a coal merchant, who while trying to support his family, stumbles upon some disturbing truths hidden within the local convent. His discovery forces him to confront his own past and the silent complicity of a small Irish town heavily influenced by the Catholic Church.
Featuring Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Zara Devlin, the movie is set during the weeks leading up to Christmas in 1985. Directed by Tim Mielants (Peaky Blinders) and adapted by Enda Walsh (Hunger, Disco Pigs), the film will be released on October 17.
