Known for songs like Ever Blazin’, Never Gonna Be The Same, Press It Up, No Lie, Rockabye and many others, Sean Paul has been an integral part of the music industry for more than two decades now. With his work spanning dancehall, pop, and ragga, the Jamaican musician recently opened up about his retirement plans, declaring that he is not soon stepping out of the spotlight.
At the Wireless Festival in London this month, 51-year-old Sean Paul spoke to NME and shared his thoughts about retirement. He began by explaining how he feels “amazing” every time he performs at Wireless. Affirming himself as the legend of dancehall, Paul added, “It’s a mixture of music and, like our people in the Caribbean, very spicy. I’m proud of it and I’m glad to be someone who brings forth some of the new stuff.”
He also revealed that his mission throughout his musical career was to “emulate the big music that he heard from Bob Marley, Super Cat, Shabba Ranks, and the Third World Band—all these greats—and add to what they gave.”
Sean Paul On Retirement Plans
When asked if he plans to retire anytime soon, Paul exclaimed he wishes to work till he is “dead like a tyre.”
“No, man, mi nah retire ’til mi dead like a tyre, trust me na’ man. Being an older statesman, it does get harder to jump up, but it keeps me youthful. I read a thing that if you go to two concerts or two festivals every month, you’ll’ gain nine years of your life, so I’m going to live forever!” he said. The Dutty Rock superstar also added that performing helps him stay “fresh and young” and that he loves concerts and live performances that are a “synergy and a gathering of people of like-minded people who want to party and have fun and forget the stresses of their present life.”
Debunking plans for his retirement, Sean Paul also opened up about his future projects, stating that he has some new music on the way with Jada Kingdom and Becky G, further adding that he is also working on new music with his cousin Quan-Dajai Henriques and Ras Ajai.
