Actor Shekhar Suman, who is currently starring in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, shared a story about Shashi Kapoor. In the movie Utsav from 1984, where Shekhar acted with Rekha and Shashi, they had a frightening experience while driving to Bengaluru. Their car hit a man, and angry villagers attacked them. Shekhar said on the Honestly Saying Podcast that villagers surrounded them, damaging the car and hurting them.

Shekhar said, “Shashi Kapoor and Anuradha Patel, who played my wife, and me and his son Kunal Kapoor, were returning from Bangalore to catch a flight. We were sitting in the car, an Ambassador, and we hit a man on the road. He went flying, and then the villagers came and they started hitting all of us. They broke the windshield; they caught Shashi Kapoor by the collar, and they started beating up Kunal Kapoor. There was this actor who’s no more, Mr. Rajesh, they caught hold of his hair and said, ‘We’re going to behead you.’ The man who was actually hit was sitting under a tree, sipping tea and smiling. I don’t know what he was muttering in his native language, but it was so scary.”

Shekhar revealed that he was offered his first film, Utsav, only two weeks after moving to Mumbai from Patna. He remembered how his co-star Rekha faced a major income tax raid on the first day of shooting. Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, he said, “Any other actor would have packed their bags and gone away. She said, ‘Let them do their job, I’ll stay back and do mine’. I was afraid that my world had come crashing down, that she would leave and the film would get cancelled, my dreams would be shattered.”

Shekhar Suman also shared that the actress was very professional on set and never refused physical contact in scenes, unlike other actresses. “She was an absolute professional. I’ll forever be indebted to her,” he said.

In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming series, Shekhar Suman brings Zulfiqar Ahmed to life, a character of authority whose very demeanour exudes power and sophistication. His son, Adhyayan Suman, plays Zorawar Ali Khan, a wealthy and arrogant nawab whose actions are guided solely by self-interest.
