After re-releasing in China amid the coronavirus pandemic, James Cameron-directed Avatar has just surpassed Avengers: Endgame as the highest grossing film of all time. The first Avatar film was a huge success upon release in 2009, becoming the highest-grossing blockbuster. Its worldwide record was broken last year by Avengers: Endgame (2019).
On Friday, Cameron’s film rung up an estimated USD 3.5 million in new ticket sales after it was re-released in China, where moviegoing has rebounded following theater closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
That put Avatar just shy of the USD 2.798 billion worldwide total collected by Endgame, according to distributor Walt Disney Co. Both films are now owned by Disney after the company bought entertainment assets from Fox in 2019.
As per latest report, Avatar now stands at USD 2.802 billion, with the Avengers at USD 2.797 billion.
Marvel Studios shared a tribute art on their social media handle hailing James and film producer Jon Landau.
Russo Brothers also shared a Endgame theme artwork writing, “Passing the gauntlet back to you.”
James also shared the artwork on his official social media handles.
Meanwhile, Avatar franchise is also shooting currently. It is being believed that Avatar 2 takes place 12 years after the events of the first movie. It follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) as he roams the planet of Pandora with the new family he has with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).
Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 will follow through years leading up to 2028.
