A brand new trailer for Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie À Deux is already out, promising to “give people what they want." With Joaquin Phoenix returning as Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker, he now has Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, who is ready to “blow your mind." The Oscar and Grammy-winning singer recently opened up about her character, revealing that she had to change her singing voice. In a conversation with Empire, Lady Gaga said that she refrained from using many of her professional singing techniques during the film, explaining that Quinn wouldn’t have known them.
The singer plays Lee, a new incarnation of DC’s Harley Quinn and Joker’s love interest. “People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That’s me as that performer, but that is not what this movie is; I’m playing a character. So I worked a lot on the way that I sang to come from Lee and not come from me as a performer," she said. The singer-actor even stressed that fans should not expect her Lady Gaga-style music, as Lee is a character that comes from a very different background in life, so she had to sing in a way that is more true to her on-screen persona.
Lady Gaga went on to draw comparisons between herself and Lee and added that she removed the technicalities in the process of playing the character. Mentioning that there were a lot of “bum notes" from Lee, the Shallow singer shared how she even controlled the way she breathed onstage, as she usually makes sure to be on the pitch and sustain at the right rhythm and amount of time, something that Lee would never know.
“So it’s like removing the technicality of the whole thing, removing my perceived art form from it all, and completely being inside of who she is," Gaga said.
Joker And Quinn Find Love In New Joker Trailer
In the latest trailer, Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck could be seen dealing with the newly-built stardom with the support of Gaga’s Quinn, who feels that she’s not “alone" anymore. “You can do anything you want. You’re Joker," she tells him while Joker declares in court, “I will no longer allow any of you to keep me down."
The film is centred on the Arkham Asylum, where Fleck is captivated, awaiting trial for his crimes. However, that’s where he finds true love and breaks free to embark on a dark romantic misadventure. Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theatres on October 4, 2024.
