The goal is to bring Marathi films to an international level and to make them popular with international audiences. Vikas Kharge, Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, congratulated the teams of the three selected films and wished them all the best. A total of 23 films were authorised this year out of which three films were selected.

The Marathi film Gypsy was selected for the film market at the Cannes International Film Festival. In addition, the film Bhera was sent to Cannes by Srikant Bhide. The film Valli by Manoj Shinde was also selected.

Gypsy

Gypsy is the story of a family of a nomadic tribe that wanders throughout their lives. Since the little boy Jotya has to eat bad, stale food every day, which he begs, he is very attracted to fresh, warm food. But since he can’t eat like that, he is always only dependent on his sense of smell. So he gets used to smelling the food. On the other hand, his mother finds it difficult to settle in one place because she has to wander around during her pregnancy. Next, the plough is overwhelmed by the smell of a substance. And finally, this smell allows him to change his life.

Valli

The protagonist of the story is a follower of the Jogata tradition – a person who is born in the body of a primitive man and manifests himself in several forms as a woman. During this decade, Valli realises that his true masculinity has been largely neglected. Valli has to endure physical attacks, social ridicule and public harassment and decides to free himself from the shackles of tradition. She goes on a journey with Tara to face the harsh realities of city life.

Bhera

Bhera is the story of two innocent lives in a remote village in Lower Konkan during the Covid era. Anibai, who lives alone in the village far away from the main settlement, is eagerly waiting for her son Suresh, who is stuck in Mumbai during the Covid period. Anibai suffers from appendicitis and Vishnu, who is deaf-mute from birth, is her only connection to the rest of the world. The orphan boy Vishnu, who lives like a slave in his uncle’s house on his mother’s side, but longs for Maya, comes to Anibai full of affection. Vishnu, who has no idea where Anibai is and is waiting for his friend Suresh on one side, gets even more excited.
