Kangana Ranaut Reveals Why She Needed 'Regular Visits’ From Rangoli On Emergency Set: ‘Bollywood Boycotted…’
Emergency star Kangana Ranaut says she feels grateful to be surrounded by a support system who became her ‘punching bags’.

Emergency marks Kangana Ranaut’s second production venture under Manikarnika Films after Tike Weds Sheru and her second directorial after Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. The trailer of the film was unveiled earlier today and features Kangana as former Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. True to its title, the political drama is set in 1975 India when an emergency was imposed in the country. At its trailer launch event held in Mumbai today, Kangana said that donning the hat of a producer, a director, an actor and a writer was no cakewalk.

Talking about how keeping a positive temperament often became difficult during the shoot, she shared, “It’s highly demanding, emotionally, mentally and physically. It’s too much for anybody to be at your best in terms of communication and temperament. It’s unrealistic. More than good news, bad news keep coming in, that someone is not available on these dates, it’s raining, it’s flooding, something is dripping or a certain equipment is stuck.”

And that’s why Kangana feels grateful to be surrounded by a support system who became her ‘punching bags’. “So, you need a small group of punching bags and my direction team has been that for me. They let me punch and take my frustration out. That let me be patient and nice to my actors. There are people who’re there to help you,” she said.

Kangana’s brother Aksht Ranaut also serves a producer on Emergency. Often, her sister Rangoli Chandel visited the set for a rather interesting reason. “You also need a family member because there are finances involved and you need to trust somebody with that. I needed regular visits from my sister because you also need to gossip. How else can you do that?” she remarked.

Shedding light on the challenges she faced as a filmmaker, she shared, “You need a good mix of people to go through the grind. You can’t be expected to plan everything. With locations, scenes, seasons, hours and actor beings different each time, how are you going to plan a job where nothing is fixed? One day you may have a wig that’s not working and on other days, you may have a crane that’s not stable despite everyone putting their best foot forward.”

Kangana added, “There are new challenges every day. You need to have your people around you who you can understand and who love you. The industry boycotted me and didn’t stand with me. It isn’t easy for them to do my films and it’s the most difficult thing to praise me. But my actors have done all of it. Anupam (Kher) ji would come in everyday and make me laugh. We cracked so many jokes. I thank him for being strongly all my side. It’s very important to work with people who make you feel at home and respect you.”

Also starring Shreyas Talpade (as Atal Bihari Vajpayee), Mahima Chaudhry (Pupul Jayakar), Milind Soman (as Sam Manekshaw) and late Satish Kaushik as (Jagjivan Ram), Emergency is set for a theatrical release on September 6.
