You may have thought that the pressure on actresses to look as gorgeous as possible at all times has declined post multiple waves of feminism. But in reality, the pressure – to appear years younger than actual age to sporting the right look - continues to escalate.
Kajol, who rejected the notion of what the Indian film heroine should look like, admits to not showing any interest in looking glamorous because of the fact that she was way too ‘lazy’. “That was really me being lazy. I just couldn’t be bothered. It just didn’t matter to me… you can never lie to a camera, it has an innate way of seeing through your façade and finding out exactly what you are saying without wanting to say it," she said.
As Kajol said, she was keen on paying more attention to how she performed on camera, rather than on what she looked like off camera. “What I did in front of the camera mattered more than what I wore off camera or what I said off camera. I concentrated on that and I still do that today."
But the actress does admit that now it is extremely important for the stars to have styling, hair and makeup professionals at their disposal all the time. “Today, off screen appearances are a lot more important than they were at that point of time."
Kajol also agreed that she has made a conscious decision to make an effort to pay more attention to her fashion choices. Having completed her boarding school at 15 and started working at 16, the actress never had any sense of what fashion was all about. “I had no wish to be fashionable at that point of time. The only word fashion that ever worked in my vocabulary was fashion street." But then, she made a sincere attempt to understand it better.
