In India we can't take freedom of speech for granted: Kamal Haasan
The 'Vishwaroopam' star recalled events that threatened the democracy while addressing the gathering at Harvard University.

Veteran actor and film maker Kamal Haasan who was present at annual India Conference of Harvard University, talked about Democracy in India. Haasan asserted that democracy is a work in progress which requires constant vigilance to safeguard it. He said," I have taken the opportunity to put on record here and in India we can't take freedom of speech for granted and complacently think that democracy automatically means freedom of speech,"

The 'Vishwaroopam' star recalled events that threatened the democracy. He said, " It is only through the offices of democracy that Adolf Hitler rose to the power. In the Indian political history, emergency was promulgated and voices were silenced "

The actor is a part of the reform committee that is going to recommend changes in the functioning of Central Board of Film Certification in India. On various occasions the actor has faced wrath from political parties and sub-wings for expressing his thoughts through films and words.
