The Supergirl is one of the most popular characters of the DC Comics universe. On Tuesday, James Gunn, the CEO of DC Studio, confirmed that actor Milly Alcock will play Supergirl in the upcoming feature film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The movie is going to be based on the comic of the same name, written by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. It is reported that director Ana Nogueira will write the screenplay of the film.
Gunn announced Milly Alcock’s role by sharing a screengrab of an article that mentioned Alcock’s casting and wrote, “This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira.”

Later on Threads, he wrote, “In case you missed this exciting news yesterday. Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”
Gunn’s confession that he wanted to cast Alcock as Supergirl a year ago when actor Sasha Calle was already playing Supergirl in The Flash, prompted many people to speculate that Gunn intended to replace Calle from the onset. Many people also expressed their disappointment that Calle will be replaced as Supergirl even before getting a bigger role in the DC extended universe. It is interesting to note that Calle is the first Latina actress to play Supergirl.
I’m pretty sure Milly Alcock will do a wonderful job as Supergirl, but that still doesn’t mean I’m not bummed the Colombian badass Sasha Calle will not be returning. pic.twitter.com/46xAdC8iyS— Andres Gallego (@galleghost) January 30, 2024
Milly Alcock is going to be great as Supergirl but WB making Sasha Calle promote The Flash all by herself only to recast her is wild. Hollywood is a brutal business. pic.twitter.com/2zC6KIX4Ec— Austin (@AustinPlanet) January 30, 2024
Sasha Calle is really cool but it's clear that James Gunn is doing his own thing with people he puts in roles, with very limited exceptions. It's a reboot. The end. https://t.co/N6koFlQyKu— BD (@BrandonDavisBD) January 30, 2024
Sasha Calle was not the first actress to play Supergirl and she won’t be the last. pic.twitter.com/VyFEpIKpKI— Z (@TheeDCstan) January 30, 2024

You’re just trying to muster up drama for engagement. She had a meeting at DC Studios to discuss her future in DC. She was never promised to keep going as Supergirl.I swear you people treat Sasha Calle like she’s a dumb child that was doesn’t understand the situation she was in. https://t.co/9EBEnvTf4H pic.twitter.com/zZQV3r7kLa— Green Lantern DCU Updates (@LanternUpdates) January 30, 2024
Of course…another blonde white woman cast as #SuperGirl. I get it, she’s blonde “in the comics” but…it’s just another reminder that we will never see #SashaCalle , a woman of color, play the part again. pic.twitter.com/8kweldHWKU— Brandon Ryan (@BydBlockbuster) January 30, 2024
An X user posted about this casting change and wrote, “Of course another blonde white woman cast as SuperGirl. I get it, she’s blonde “in the comics” but…it’s just another reminder that we will never see Sasha Calle, a woman of color, play the part again.”
Another DC fan wrote, “Milly Alcock is going to be great as Supergirl but WB making Sasha Calle promote The Flash all by herself only to recast her is wild. Hollywood is a brutal business.”
However, many people defended Gunn and mentioned that over the years many actors have been replaced to play roles like Supergirl, Superman, Batman, etc. Therefore, there is nothing personal or disingenuous about replacing Calle with another actor. Helen Slater was the first actor to play Supergirl in 1984, followed by Nicolle Tom, Laura Vandervoort, Laura Bailey, and Melissa Benoist.
