Happy Birthday Ila Arun: 5 Folk-inspired Hindi movie songs
On the occasion of Ila Arun birthday, we take a look at five folk-inspired songs from the films she was a part of.

Actress and singer Ila Arun is famous for her work in theatres and Bollywood, particularly her songs, which have strong ethnic flavours inspired by Rajasthani folk music. She has often called for more support for folk artistes. On the occasion of her birthday, we take a look at five folk-inspired songs from the films she was a part of.

Morni Baaga Ma Bole (1991)

This song from the Yash Chopra directed cult classic Lamhe, starring Sridevi, has two parts. The short opening section, ‘Mhaare Rajasthan Ma’, is sung solely by Ila. The second, larger section is the ‘Morni Baaga Ma Bole’ track, which was performed by Lata Mangeshkar along with Ila and Moinuddin. The song is picturised on Sridevi and Ila’s characters who sing and perform folk dances along with a musical troupe in the Thar desert.

Choli Ke Peeche (1993)

This folk-inspired track is what Ila is most associated with as a singer. The song is from the crime thriller Khal Nayak, directed by Subhash Ghai and starring Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff in lead roles. Choli Ke Peeche, performed by Ila and Alka Yagnik, was written by lyricist Anand Bakshi and its music was composed by the famous Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo.

Gutur Gutur (1993)

This song from the film Dalaal was written by lyricist Maya Govind and composed by Bappi Lahiri. Apart from Ila, singers Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu and Bappi Lahiri too lent their vocals for this ethnic-flavoured song. The track is picturised on the characters played by actors Mithun Chakraborty and Ayesha Jhulka.

Gup Chup Gup Chup (1995)

The song is from Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun, picturised on the character played by actress Mamata Kulkarni. Ila and Alka Yagnik joined forces once again to perform this highly popular track written by lyricist Indeevar and composed by Rajesh Roshan.

Ringa Ringa (2008)

This popular track from Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire was written by Raweeb Alam and performed by Ila and Alka Yagnik. A.R. Rahman composed this song as a tribute to Ila’s Choli Ke Peeche.
