The climax of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum-opus Padmaavat has become the most talked about scene in the film. While many were awed by the ending scene, which features Padmavati (played by Deepika Padukone) walking in anger as other women join her to commit self-immolation, some criticised it for glorifying the practice of Sati and Jauhar.
Recently, actor Swara Bhaskar called out the film's director Sanjay Leela Bhansali in an open letter and said "your act of thoughtlessly glorifying this misogynistic criminal practice is something you ought to answer for, Sir."
Soon after the open letter went viral on social media, a lot of people from the industry started reacting to it. On the sidelines of Radio Mirchi Awards on Sunday, director Rohit Shetty said, "I'd like to request everyone that after so much troubles and struggles the film 'Padmaavat' has released, please let it run in peace."
Actor Shahid Kapoor, who essays the role of Maharawal Ratan Singh in the movie, said "Every practice happens for various reasons. Within this film, Padmavati believed she would want to go into the fire as opposed to handing herself over to a man who is so evil, that he is ready to kill the entire kingdom to achieve one woman."
When Deepika was asked about the controversy surrounding the climax, the actor said one must see the film and the particular scene in the context of the period in which it was shown.
"We are not endorsing Jauhar. You do not feel like she is doing anything wrong. You want her to embrace the flames because she is going to be united with the man she loves," she was quoted as saying by DNA.
The actor further said it was the most difficult scene for her as "we shot it in peak summer at Film City in Mumbai and with my heavy costume and jewellery, the heat was oppressive."
