Even though nearly three decades have passed since Juhi Chawla made her big screen debut with ‘Sultanat’, the mania surrounding her just refuses to fade away.

A popular name in Hindi as well as regional cinema, the actress has over the years won over a legion of loyal fans thanks to her perfect comic timing, in depth understanding of roles, flawless expressions and of course vivacious personality. Today, as Chawla celebrates her birthday, we present before you some of her most memorable performances.

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak: Touted as a romantic-drama, ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ is perhaps best remembered for the crackling chemistry between Chawla and Aamir Khan. A blockbuster in every sense of the word, it catapulted the actress to super stardom and helped her win a Filmfare award. Released in 1988, it was later on remade in Telugu as ‘Akkada Ammayi Ikkaa Abbayi’.

Pratibandh: A remake of the popular Telugu film ‘Ankusam’, this action-drama marked the Bollywood debut of southern superstar Chiranjeevi. Essaying the role of the protagonist’s love interest, Chawla delivered a sincere performance which helped her floor critics and audiences alike. Interestingly, ‘Pratibandh’ was a big hit at the box office.

Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke: Featuring the much loved pair of Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan, ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke’ boasted of a lively screenplay and some catchy numbers. Released in 1993, the film was a runaway hit at the box office and helped the actress bag a Filmfare award.

Daraar: Loosely based on the Julia Roberts starrer ‘Sleeping with the enemy’, this dark thriller saw Chawla strike up a crackling rapport with Arbaaz Khan and Rishi and prove her versatility as a performer. Interestingly, the film features some hummable numbers which were composed by Anu Malik.

Yes Boss: Bringing together the Shah Rukh-Juhi pair, ‘Yes Boss’revolved around a middle class man and an aspiring model who fall in love courtesy an unfortunate turn of events. Touted as a drama and directed by Aziz Mirza, it also featured Aditya Pancholi and Gulshan Grover in pivotal roles.

Bol Radha Bol: Directed by David Dhawan, ‘Bol Radha Bol’ created a stir amongst movie buffs thanks to the highly popular ‘Tu Tu Tu Tara’ number as well as its engaging narrative. A major critical and commercial success, it helped Chawla consolidate her standing in the industry even further.Moreover, the film’s success also gave a lease of life to Rishi Kapoor’s then fading career.

Vicky Daada: Directed by Kondaramani Reddy, this Telugu crime-drama opened to a thunderous response at the box office and helped Chawla expand her fanbase even further. Interestingly, the film featured none other than Telugu cinema’s resident ‘King’ Nagarjuna in the titular role.

Gulaab Gang: Generally regarded as the best film of Juhi Chawla’s illustrious career, ‘Gulaab Gang’ featured her as the antagonist opposite her former ‘rival’ Madhuri Dixit. Directed by Soumik Sen, the film highlighted the challenges faced by women in the country. Touted as crime-drama, ‘Gulaab Gang’ failed at the box office despite receiving tremendous critical acclaim.

3 Deewarein: Revolving around the relationship between three prisoners and a documentary filmmaker, the offbeat ‘3 Deewarein’ was screened the International Film Festival of India 2003 where it received tremendous critical acclaim.

My Brother Nikhil: Based on real life events, ‘My Brother Nikhil’ highlighted the life of renowned AIDS activist Dominic D’Souza. Directed by Onir, it saw Chawla deliver a sincere performance and bagged a critics’ award.

Darr: Boasting of a dark and violent climax, ‘Darr’ saw Chawla essay the role of Shah Rukh Khan’s “K..k..k Kiran’ with absolute ease. Also featuring Sunny Deol in a pivotal role, this Yash Chopra-directed thriller proved to be major commercial success.
