No specific age group for breast cancer; those in 20s have also been diagnosed by it: Dr Ullas Batra

If an analysis by the Indian Council of Medical Research is anything to go by then 10 out of every 100,000 women living in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore have been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 as compared to 23 for every 100,000 women in 2015. So all those who think breast cancer isn’t destructive need to pay attention to what medical experts have been saying – such has been the spurt in the cases of breast cancer that it has taken over cervical cancer among Indian women.
On his recent visit to IBNLive office, Dr Ullas Batra (Consultant Medical Oncologist, Rajeev Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre) spoke to us about the impact of breast cancer and a lot more.
On being asked if those diagnosed with breast cancer belong to a specific age group, he said, “There is no specific age group for breast cancer. People usually think that this happens in the elderly. But now the cases of breast cancer are increasing in the young. We see a lot of people in their 20s and 30s complaining of breast cancer. In India, half of the cases of breast cancer occur in the age group of 25-50. That is a decade earlier than it has been in the West."
