Nag Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha in the auspicious month of Sawan and will be observed on August 9 this year. According to the beliefs in Hinduism, worshipping the Nag Devta (snake God) holds a lot of importance, and helps the devotee get rid of any dosh, especially Kaal Sarp dosha.
According to Ujjain’s Pandit Anand Bhardwaj, there are some precautions that the devotees should take to stay free of the Kaal Sarp dosha. As per Anand Bhardwaj-
1. The devotees should not, even by mistake, kill a snake on the day of Nag Panchami. Failing to do so can harm the person and also its entire lineage.
2. According to the believers, on the day of Nag Panchami, one should not use tawa and iron pan for cooking on the stove. If the believers do this, it may cause pain to the snake god.
3. People should not dig the land on the day of Nag Panchami as it is believed that snakes have burrows underground. Digging the ground can destroy the snake’s house or hole. Doing so can impact many generations of the person with the Kaal Sarp dosha.
4. As per the religious scriptures, people should refrain from using sharp objects on the day of Nag Panchami. Activities like sewing, embroidery, etc. are considered inauspicious.
On Nag Panchami, devotees should wake up first thing in the morning before sunrise and complete the daily chores. They should then have a shower and after this, worship the snake god along with Lord Shiva. They should then offer fruits, flowers, sweets and milk in the worship of Nag Devta. As per the beliefs, devotees who have Kaal Sarp Dosh or any dosh related to Rahu-Ketu in their horoscope must worship the snake god on the day of Nag Panchami.
Don’t’s on Nag Panchami
There are some other points as well that should be not done on this auspicious day
Taking Snakes from the Wild- Devotees should avoid capturing snakes from the wild for display during the festival. This can destroy the ecosystem and harm snake populations.
Using Venomous Snakes- Some unethical activities involve using poisonous snakes for public display or entertainment. Believers should avoid supporting or participating in such activities.
