Tea is a staple drink among Indians and in a country where chai breaks are more of a tradition, it is understood that there are numerous tea-sellers as well. However, one tea-seller in Kolkata has taken things a notch up and is selling the drink at Rs 1000.
A tea stall in Kolkata’s Mukundapur called Nijash sells different varieties of tea that range from Rs 12 to Rs 1,000 for a cup. The shop is owned by Partha Pratim Ganguly where he serves around 100 varieties of tea.
According to a report by The Times of India, the highest costing tea that is priced at Rs 1,000 is the Bo-Lei tea that costs Rs 3 lakh per kilogram. Bo-Lei, also known as Pu-Erh tea or Puer, Po Lei, Bolay tea, and Dark Tea is a tea made in China. The Bo-Lei tea is made from Camellia Sinensis tea which is the same plant which is used to make green and black tea. Bo-Lei, however, is fermented and oxidized which gives the tea a unique deep, earthy flavor. Because of the fermentation of Bolay, it even gives the tea an incredible shelf life and allows the tea to age well. Besides Bolay other varieties of tea that are sold at the shop include Blue Tisane Tea, Teesta Valley Tea, Silver Needle White Tea, Lavender Tea, Hibiscus Tea, Wine Tea, Tulsi Ginger Tea, Makaibari Tea, Rooibos Tea, and Okayti Tea.
Partha’s story itself is an inspiration for those who want to pursue their passion. Partha Pratim Ganguly, earlier had plans of working a full time job, but then he left his job to start his own business of a regular tea stall but with an edge. He started his business in 2014 and soon became a hit among Kolkata’s chai consumers.
The Times of India mentions that Partha is not only good at selling tea but is also knowledgeable about the properties of each tea variant.
