THRISSUR: The heat of the day and the chill of the night notwithstanding, the State School Youth Festival seemed to draw hoards on the weekend day, with almost all the venues enjoying full attendance and Kozhikode racing forward to kiss the Golden Cup. In almost all events on Saturday, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur and Kannur dominated the stage.Kozhikode is far ahead of the contenders, with more than 30 points at 765, while Malappuram and Thrissur are closing in on the leader in a desperate dash with 734 and 733 points. However, the great expectations about performance art items such as folk dance, Thiruvathirakkali, group dance, Parichamuttukali, Oppana, Ganamela, Kadhaprasangam, Koodiyattam, Kolkkali, Daffu Muttu, Yakshaganam and so forth, most items were stale and drab because of gumption of the participating students who were dead tired of waiting hours to finish their three items on various stages, as well as lack of innovation.Creative fire that used to set the house on fire was conspicuously missing. With 202 events completed and only 16 events waiting results, it has become more or less certain that Kozhikode will lift the trophy this year as well. The ninetimes champion also has two hat-tricks to its credit.Coming to the break down in the high school and the higher secondary school category, while St Teresa’s AIHSS Kannur was seen leading in the first segment with 70 points, BSSGHSS Alathur (Palakkad) and St Joseph’s Anglo Indian Girls HSS (Kozhikode) were right behind, with 64 and 51 points. In the HSS section, Durga HSS Kanhangad (Kasaragod) claimed the lead back, with a staggering 127 points, with MKNMHS Kumaramangalam (Idukki) and Silver Hills HSS (Kozhikode) laming behind with 86 and 83 points. There were usual complaints, as the festival is almost over. No one to clean the stages after the performance; the Kolkkali stage betraying the performers as well as the chief stage examiner with slippery tiles; fainting talents and faint-hearted parents who wanted the A grade in order to get that grace mark for the entrance exams; each participant after the media for their sound bite and image, in the vain hope that some filmmaker will pick them up…. A noisy but predictably dull day.
