CHENNAI: Reaffirming her resolve to retrieve Katcha theevu, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday told the State Assembly that she would not rest until the island was taken back from Sri Lanka. Concurring with the view of CPI MLA, M Arumugam, who wanted retrieval of Katchatheevu to end attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen, Jayalalithaa said reclaiming the island was the only permanent solution to the issue. “He (Arumugam) mentioned that our fishermen should not be put to any harm by the Sri Lankan Navy and wanted protection for their source of livelihood in traditional fish areas. The only solution is to claim back Katchatheevu that was given away on a platter,” she said. Recalling a petition filed by her party in 2008 in the Supreme Court on the Katchatheevu issue, she said, “To protect the livelihood rights of Tamil Nadu’s fishermen, I will not rest till Katchatheevu is retrieved.”On the repeated references to the hike in the milk prices and bus fare from members of the opposition, she reiterated that it was inevitable and had to be done to save the State-run enterprises from bankruptcy.
