New Delhi: Soon after the launch of its most ambitious operating system, Microsoft has been slammed with a patent-infringement lawsuit for using Live Tiles that is core to the new Windows operating systems including Windows 8.
According to PC World, SurfCast, a Maine, US, based company, filed its lawsuit on Tuesday in the US District Court for the District of Maine, and is asking for Microsoft to pay for damages and attorneys’ fees. Surfcast claims to have developed and patented the live tile technology in back in the 1990s.
Ovid Santoro, CEO of SurfCast, said on SurfCast’s website, “We developed the concept of Tiles in the 1990s, which was ahead of its time. Microsoft’s Live Tiles are the centerpiece of Microsoft’s new operating systems and are covered by our patent.”
This in turn brought a sharp rejoinder from Microsoft, which in a statement said, that it would prove in court that SurfCast’s claims are without merit and that Microsoft had created an unique user experience. Unlike conventional icons, live tiles, which are colourful rectangular or square icons in the Start screen of new Windows versions, show data about the element it links to and update in real time.
