CHENNAI: The much-awaited North East monsoon has set in over the State and adjoining Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Rayalseema. Met officials, said the rains TN witnessed on Monday,  is likely to extend  post-Deepavali till this weekend.“The NE monsoon has currently set in the coastal parts of the State, due to an influence exerted by a weak trough in the TN coast and a low pressure area of Kerala coast,” said Dr YEA Raj, deputy director general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai. The monsoon this year set in four days later than its marked day of October 20.“The current spell of rain enjoyed in the coastal parts of TN is expected to extend till the end of this week,” said the official, adding that this forecast was made using inputs from the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, and the teams of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai and the IMD.The monsoon covers  TN, AP, Puducherry and Rayalseema. It accounts for 60 per cent of coastal TN’s annual rainfall, and 48 per cent of TN’s overall rain receipt. The season ends in December.
