The 'Nabanna Abhijan' protest in Kolkata saw violent clashes as hundreds of students and state employees demanded Mamata Banerjee's resignation over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ saw dramatic scenes on Tuesday as the protesters in Kolkata broke police barricades and pelted stones.

The march was organised against the backdrop of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, thus demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the arrest of those involved in the crime.

Hundreds of students commenced the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ from two locations across Kolkata, raising slogans, and holding the Chief Minister responsible for failing to ensure the safety and security of women, which they argue led to the RG Kar tragedy that sparked nationwide outrage.

Water cannons were fired as protesters held onto banners, and raised slogans, demanding justice for the rape and murder victim.

Security personnel lathi charged and chased away protestors from Howrah Bridge.

The rally was organised by the student platform ‘Chhatrasamaj’, and ‘Sangrami Joutha Mancha’ of state government employees.

Protesters gathered at Howrah Bridge’s Kolkata end and near Santragachhi Railway station on Kona Expressway and attempted to break through police barricades to reach the state secretariat, Nabanna.

Some protesters were also seen dragging away barricades, even as the police resorted to opening lathi charge at them.

Agitators were also seen pelting stones at the protest site.

At the beginning of the protest, agitators were seen climbing up the barricades and clashing with the police.

On August 22, the Supreme Court said peaceful protests over the incident shall not be disturbed or disrupted by the West Bengal government.

The court, however, clarified that it has not injuncted the state government from exercising lawful powers.
