VELLORE: VIT Chancellor G Viswanathan on Monday handed over computers and stationery worth Rs 5 lakh to government schools in Wallajah union at the valediction of the week-long NSS camp that was held by VIT students at the Thiruparkadal village.Speaking on the occasion, Viswanathan said that the 600 plus students of the university, who had participated in the NSS camp, had covered 15 villages in and around the Thiruparkadal village. While parents should take responsibility and care to educate their children, they should also help them imbibe discipline, social responsibility and target- oriented approach in their life.Education was the basis on which India has its future and all efforts must be made in the village level to achieve this goal, he added. The students who had participated in the camp taught students of the village schools English, computer applications, de-stressing activities, road safety etc. They had also engaged themselves in cleaning up the sc-hool campuses, planting of tree saplings besides conducting a survey of literacy levels in the villages.A special medical camp was held in the villages in association with the Indian Medical Association, while a veterinary camp in association with the department of animal husbandry was also conducted.
