CHENNAI: Ten students, aged between from six and 14, sat in rapt attention as their teacher called them to order. Seated on the floor of a stage, they dutifully sang their prayer song and took to their books. The children and teacher were giving a small demonstration of what goes on in over 1,320 schools in TN every evening in the single teacher classes established by EKAL Vidyashram. There are more than 37,000 such classes all over the country, and the students were at an event organised to show the donors the level of progress achieved by them.Speaking to Express, Madhavan Narayanan, Executive Secretary of EKAL said, “We run these informal schools for first generation learners, to inspire them to go to regular schools. They will also get used to the discipline of study and sitting in a classroom with other students.”The classes are conducted for three hours in the evening, in a public space. One teacher from the village itself is trained to handle students from classes one to five. “This way, both the students and the teachers are comfortable with each other,” says Madhavan.
