Veteran Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande dead
Deshpande, a Rajya Sabha member, was unwell for the past few days.

New Delhi: Veteran Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande passed away in the national capital on Thursday morning. She was 79.

Deshpande, a Rajya Sabha member, was unwell for the past few days and she died in her sleep early, Rajshree, one of her close associates told PTI.

"Deshpande had returned from Dhanbad on Tuesday and had some gastric problems. She was suffering from fever from last evening," she said.

Deshpande, popularly known as Didi, by her followers and admirers was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra on October 17, 1929. Her parents were late Shri P Y Deshpande and Shrimati Vimalabai Deshpande.

Her father was a politically active person and was the member of Parliament. He brought up Didi in an open and free environment. She was given the opportunity of going in for higher education and did MA in Political Science from Nagpur, India, She also studied Ferguson College, Pune.

Initially, she served as lecturer in Political Science in Morris College, Nagpur.
