The first phase of the Vellore Police Department’s ambitious surveillance project is nearing completion. The installation of 51 cameras — 47 static and four speed dome cameras — has been completed and testing is underway to bring strategic points in the Fort City under the ‘Third Eye’ of the police department. The project was undertaken to make policing in the city effective, check crimes and manage traffic efficiently.
The project is being implemented under public private partnership programme by Royal Universys Webnet Private Ltd, Coimbatore, Aadwell Advertising, Vellore and Amman Ads, Salem at a cost of Rs 2.2 crore. The master control room has been set up in the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Vellore and District Police Office.
“Software installation and testing is going on for the last 20 days. We will hand over the surveillance mechanism to the police department within three weeks,” said N Vijay, operational head of the project.
The surveillance mechanism with in-built analytical software gives the cameras unique features such as face recognition, motion detection, object counting, camera tampering detection and image enhancement. “We are fine-tuning the mechanism and defining the work module of the surveillance system to facilitate the police department in all aspects from traffic management and crime detection. The facility can be customized as per the requirement of the police,” he added.
While the wireless infrared cameras have been fixed at 47 major junctions and important roads, four speed dome cameras have been installed at Makkan Junction, Palace Cafe, National Theatre and Green Circle. “The cameras will take 25 to 30 high-resolution frames of an object per second. The range of the static cameras is 40 metres and that of the speed dome cameras is 300 to 400 metres. The surveillance system is equipped with online UPS and four hours battery backup. It also has a video backup for 15 days,” he said.
The object counting facility will help the police keep track of each vehicle, from two-wheelers to heavy vehicles, entering and leaving Vellore city, he added.
“We are also planning to enable the surveillance system with fire and smoke detection alarms,” he further said.
The second phase of the project would be completed within two months and will cover Katpadi sub-division. “A total of 38 cameras will be installed in and around Katpadi,” he added.
