THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Speaker G Karthikeyan has described poet Vallathol as a rare genius whose aesthetic sensibility was shaped by a combination of scientific temper and spirituality. ‘’Readers in all ages can relate to his poetry, just as it evokes nostalgic memories in me,’’ Karthikeyan said. He was speaking at a function organised by the Vallathol Sahithya Samithi to give away the Vallathol Award to noted writer and thinker C Radhakrishnan here on Sunday. Singer Kallara Gopan recited ‘Vallathol Smrithi’, a tribute in verse to the legendary poet. Former Chief Secretary R Ramachandran Nair presided over the function. The award carries a plaque and a cash prize of Rs 1,11,111. Receiving the award, C Radhakrishnan remarked that Malayalam poetry’s coming of age was greatly influenced by the writings of Vallathol.
