Lucknow: Police in Uttar Pradesh have issued a statewide alert after the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) threatened to blow up several stations as well as the Krishna Janmabhoomi and Kashi Vishwanath temples, a senior official said on Wednesday.

In a letter reportedly sent by LeT area commander Maulana Ambu Shaikh to the Northern Railways on May 29, the terror group threatened to blow up the Saharanpur and Hapur railway stations among others.

“The letter was received by DRM, Firozpur, in which besides Uttar Pradesh, threats were also issued to Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan,” additional director general of police (law and order) Anand Kumar said, adding there was nothing to be afraid of.

“We are trying to work out the case and have issued an alert across the state as a precautionary measure,” he said.

Kumar also said intelligence agencies had no knowledge about the LeT “commander”. “It may be someone’s prank,” he added.

A senior official said the letter also threatened to carry out blasts at the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple in Mathura and the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and mentioned the dates of June 8-10.

Officials have been directed to keep strict vigil across the state and ensure proper security at sensitive places.
