Bengaluru: Two students were killed and four injured on Tuesday when a Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus hit them, as it lost its control after a brake failure, near Gopalan Mall on Mysore Road.

The two boys identified as Chandrakanth (16) and Yudu Kumar (15) were studying at the BBMP government PU college on Kasturba Road. The incident happened at 8 AM when the boys were crossing the road near the KSRTC Satellite bus stand. The ill-fated bus which lost its control landed on the footpath knocking the pedestrians over. The BMTC bus route no 223D/5 was on its way from Mysore road towards Kempegowda Majestic Bus depot.

Soon after the incident, hundreds of students from the BBMP college came out on the streets protesting against BMTC. They sat in on a dharna, blocking the road leading to KR Market, demanding for a skywalk and better footpaths across the city.

Bengaluru Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun visited the kin of the deceased at Victoria hospital. "I am extremely saddened by this incident. It is an irreparable loss for the parents. Students have asked for a skywalk, but there is one 500 metres away," she said.

BBMP has announced Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the deceased after meeting them. Both the boys come from economically backward homes.
