New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Monday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments on triple talaq and said the issue was “purely religious” and neither the PM or the BJP had “any right to intervene”.
AIMPLB’s Zafaryab Jilani felt the comparisons were not valid. “Muslims do not even listen to his speeches. We do not know if female foeticide or sati were a part of the Hindu religion, but talaq (divorce) is something which Quran talks about, and we cannot tolerate any diversions,” he told News18.
Jilani said the AIMPLB has asked the community to refrain from taking out processions against the “government intervention” because the board did not want to politicise it.
“The BJP is trying its best to politicise the issue, but we will not. It’s a religious matter and will be solved within the realms of our religion,” he said.
Commenting on Modi’s advice to the media to not turn the debate into a “Hindu-Muslim issue”, Jilani accused the PM of trying to “shroud his hidden agendas behind a political speech by making it look diplomatic”. “Let the Supreme Court decide the issue,” he said.
Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza agreed that the comparison was “baseless”. “Female foeticide is a result of the patriarchal mindset of the society which we still harbour and suffer from. How does it have any root in the Hindu religion?” she asked.
“This is not a valid comparison at all. The NDA government should answer what have they done to tackle female foeticide. The legislations were passed during the UPA regime and this government is just playing with emotions,” she told News18
Oza said if Modi was serious about women’s rights, there would not have been serious budgetary cuts in women-related schemes. She asked why the Women’s Reservation Bill, which was passed by the Rajya Sabha, is still stuck in the Lok Sabha.
