TIRUCHY: The word ‘mass bunk’ is familiar with student community, but ‘mass failure’ has become a new term among students of Anna University of Technology, Tiruchy. Sources said, 108 students out of 146 of the second year Mechanical Department, have failed in Electronic Device and Control (EDC), which was actually their allied paper. The students alleged that the professor in-charge intentionally awarded the marks only between 1 and 5 out of 20, in their internal exam. But, students who failed to get through in the EDC paper, have no arrears in any other subject. When a group of students approached their head of the department in this regard, they were shocked to hear him say that he was helpless on the issue. Speaking to Express, Professor Thanigai Selvan, who handled the subject, said he had awarded marks in the internal examination, based on the performance of students. “We generally conduct two internal examinations for 7.5 marks each and the remaining five marks is based on their attendance. I have done my duty, as per the instructions given to me during the staff meeting. There are teachers who boost marks of students to help them get at least pass mark. But I have not done that. I have given marks based on the performance of students and I have no idea why there are so many failures”, he claimed. While Senthil Kumar, Head of the Department, Mechanical Engineering, Anna University of Technology-Tiruchy, said that the EDC was an allied paper and the marks were awarded to the students based on the performance in the internal and external examinations. “Only when the students applied for re-evaluation, I came to know there are several failures in the particular paper. Of course, I am helpless as it is handled by a staff from another department”, he said. Meanwhile, a parent of one of the failed students told Express that the university conducted two exams in a day and in short notice.
