M Rajkumar surrendered before the Perambalur police on Thursday night in connection with the mysterious death.

Perambalur: Former DMK MLA M Rajkumar surrendered before the Perambalur police on Thursday night in connection with the mysterious death of a 15-year-old girl from Kerala, who was employed in his house here. The police had earlier registered a case in this connection and named the MLA as the first accused.

According to sources, C Sathya (15), daughter of Chandran and Suseela of Peermedu in Idukki district of Kerala, was sent for work at Rajkumar’s house in Perambalur on June 23. On June 28, Sathya is said to have contacted Chandran and told him that she did not want to work in the former MLA’s house anymore.

Meanwhile, on June 29, Chandran received a call from Perambalur informing him that Sathya was not well and had been admitted to a private hospital in Perambalur and later shifted to another private hospital in Tiruchy. Since her parents could not afford to get her treated in a private hospital, they shifted her to the Theni Government Medical College Hospital on July 4.

However, Sathya died on July 6 at the hospital. The body was handed over to her parents on July 7 and brought to Idukki. It is said that her relatives noticed injuries on the body and alleged that she could have undergone physical harassment at the MLA’s house.

Subsequently, Chandran lodged a complaint with the Peermedu police and on July 9, the body was sent for a second post-mortem at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam, where injuries were found on the body, besides traces of poison. Based on the report, the Peermedu police registered a case and passed on the information to the Peramb-alur police.

As information about the death of the girl sparked tension in Perambalur, rumours kept doing the rounds that the Kerala police had arrived here to conduct investigations. However, Inspector General of Police A Alexander Mohan dismissed them. Sources said that police officials from Perambalur had gone to Peermedu to conduct an inquiry with the girl’s parents.

As news of the MLA’s surrender spread, party cadre gathered in front of the police station. A large posse of police personnel was posted at Venkatachalapathy Nagar on the Perambalur-Ariyalur Road where the former MLA’s house is located. On Thursday evening, two of the MLA’s associates, Mahendran and Anbarasan, were picked up for questioning.
