New Delhi: East Timor's Nobel Prize-winning president Jose Ramos-Horta is in an induced coma in an Australian hospital.
Ramos-Horta was critically wounded when he was shot in the stomach and arm by rebels. He was operated upon in Darwin Hospital.
The attack took place outside his home in the capital Dili on Monday morning. One of his guards and one of the attackers was killed during the attack.
The East Timor government says the United Nations failed to help the president after the attack. The UN has been in charge of security in Dili for the last two years.
East Timor, a former Portuguese colony and Asia's youngest nation became independent in 2002 after more than 20 years of Indonesian occupation.
Ramos-Horta won the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize for his resistance to Indonesian rule.
