Amritsar: Punjab Police have tightened security in Amritsar ahead of the anniversary of Operation Bluestar on Saturday.Police Commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh said flag march was taken out at three different locations in the city, including from Hall Bazar to Jallianwalla Bagh. He said the police was on high alert ahead of the anniversary as bloody clashes had taken place at Akal Takht (supreme temporal body of the Sikhs) last year.
Aulakh said he held a meeting with the officials of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) regarding security as a large number of Sikh devotees are expected to assemble at Akal Takht on Saturday. He said they assured him that SGPC task force would take care of security inside the complex, including Akal Takht premises and added that the police would extend full help to SGPC if need arises.
More than two thousand police personnel have been deployed at all sensitive points of city, including the entry points, to avoid any untoward incident, he said. Inspections were carried out of "sarais" (inns) and private lodges around the Golden Temple, hotels around railway station and bus stand to check the presence of suspicious elements, Aulakh said.
On the June 6 bandh call given by the radical Sikhs, Aulakh said police would not allow anybody to forcefully close business establishments. Meanwhile, activists of Dal Khalsa today carried out a march with photographs of the damaged Akal Takht and slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale.
The youth activists wore T-shirts depicting portrait of Bhindrawale, with a big hoarding conveying the message that "We love, admire and respect you". The activists were holding flags and carrying the photo of the Sikh youth who died yesterday in a clash between police and Sikh youths, who were protesting against removal of Bhindranwale's posters in Jammu city. The march started from Dal Khalsa office and concluded at Akal Takht.
