Hours after the Karnataka government ‘put on hold’ the best teacher award to the principal of a government Pre-University College in Udupi, who was involved in the hijab row, state Primary and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said the decision was being evaluated. He stressed that the main issue was the way he treated children and urged people not to politicise the issue.
BG Ramakrishna, the Principal of the Government Pre-University College at Kundapur in Udupi, made news during the hijab storm in 2021-22 for reportedly asking headscarf-wearing students to stand in the sun outside the classroom for months. He drew flak online.
“This particular issue, I think they (the committee) have overlooked it. So when we found out yesterday that there was an issue, we have put it on hold for the time being. We will just clarify it and then move ahead and give an update. I have told them to check again and then get back to us. The way he treated the children is the issue…Don’t politicise the issue,” the minister said.

Ramakrishna was supposed to get the award today on the occasion of Teachers’ Day but due to a severe backlash from some activists and leaders from the Muslim community, the government decided not to give him the award.
The reason behind the anger against the teacher was his alleged stand during the hijab row in the state two years ago.
“The government had earlier announced his name but now it has been withdrawn,” a source said.
