New Delhi: An Ahmedabad court is set to hear the bail plea of suspended IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt on Wednesday. The Gujarat government on Tuesday had challenged, in the sessions court, a magisterial court's order denying his remand.
Bhatt was arrested on September 30 for allegedly forcing a constable to sign a false affidavit in which he claimed that he was at a meeting in which Gujarat Chief Minister Modi gave instructions to the police to go easy on rioting Hindus in 2002.
The Home Ministry on Tuesday asked the Gujarat Government to provide adequate security to Bhatt and his family. The request came a day after Bhatt's wife appealed to Home Minister Chidambaram to intervene in the matter.
Bhatt earlier on Tuesday refused to accept police remand for few hours as suggested by a metropolitan court. The court had proposed Bhatt to accept the remand for few hours before the bail matter could be decided. He refused the suggestion stating that it was a battle of principles.
Bhatt is in judicial custody at the Sabarmati jail after a local court dismissed the police's remand extension.
