THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An all-party meeting convened by the City Corporation on Friday morning decided to ask the State Government to take necessary steps for the reopening of the Vilappilsala solid waste treatment plant in the wake of the recent Supreme Court order.The meeting observed that, "the city is on the verge of the spread of communicable diseases following the closure of the plant. The forthcoming rainy season would worsen the situation".Later in the day, an all-party delegation led by Mayor K Chandrika communicated the decision to the members of the ministerial sub-committee chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The delegation also met Urban Affairs Minister Manjalamkuzhi Ali.The all-party meeting held at the Corporation conference hall in the morning unanimously decided to seek Government intervention for executing the apex court order."The Government should take the lead to resolve the issue. The Corporation wants the issue to be settled amicably rather than a forced implementation, which would lead to a police firing,’’ the Mayor said after the meeting.The meeting observed that the works of the leachate treatment plant and the processing of the accumulated waste at the plant should be carried out immediately. The Government should help the Corporation to transport clay to the plant for the treatment of the accumulated waste, the meeting demanded.The all-party meeting was attended by Mayor K Chandrika, Deputy Mayor G Happykumar, Opposition leader Johnson Joseph and BJP leader P Asok Kumar.
