Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar has said that steps will be taken to start a Goa centre in Kerala. He was responding to a memorandum submitted by the representatives of the Konkani-speaking community from Kerala on their visit to Goa.
The team also urged the Chief Minister to expedite the various socio-cultural schemes envisaged in the Goa budget for the development of the Konkani community in Kerala. It is estimated that the strength of the Konkani community is around eight lakh in the state.
The other demands include a permanent seat in the board of non-resident Goan community, employment and educational opportunities for the Konkani-speaking diaspora, schemes to honour Konkani writers and artists and for initiating research work in the contribution of the community in Kerala.
Parrikar assured the representatives that all the demands will be considered and said that an official delegation from Goa will soon visit Kerala. The team which met the Chief Minister comprised R Bhaskar Shenoi, C Surendranath Naik, N Muralidhara Pai (trustees of Anugraha Charitable Trust), chairman of Kerala Konkani Academy Payyannur Ramesh Pai and BJP-Linguistic Minority Convenor of Kerala C G Rajagopal.
They also visited chairman of Goa Konkani Academy Pundalik Narayana Nayak and Konkani writer Uday Bhembre
