The Madras High Court on Tuesday stayed defamation proceedings pending before the Principal Sessions Judge in Chennai against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M Karunanidhi, his son and party treasurer M K Stalin and Murasoli printer, publisher and editor S Selvam and others.
Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar granted the interim injunction, while admitting writ petitions from Selvam and others.
The complaint, filed on behalf Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa by City Public Prosecutor M L Jegan, related to the comments of the accused on her recent stay at Kodanad Estate in Nilgiris district.
They contended that a plain reading of the news item would establish that it was not defamatory.
Similar petitions were filed by Sunil Nair, editor (Chennai market) and S Santhanagopalan, printer and publisher of the Times of India.
