HYDERABAD:Andhra Pradesh's first ecofriendly, energy efficient and pollution free Biomass gasifier crematorium has finally come up in the city. Bereaved families can now look forward to cremate their dead in a pollution-free environment in about an hour.It will be the first biomass gasifier crematorium to come up in the state and two such crematoria are running in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.The hitech crematorium established at Swarg Dhaam, a model cremation ground in Alwal at a cost of Rs 45 lakh was inaugurated by former Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy. Swarg Dham was started in 1984 by its chairman, S. Rajwant Singh Gulati with support from the International Association of Lions Club.Speaking to Express, Gulati said that the gasifier crematorium uses wood chips instead of electricity and the burners will be powered by a biomass gasifier and not the conventional electricity.It is an ecofriendly crematorium and at the same time functions as effectively as an electric crematorium.Biomass gasifier is a nonconventional energy equipment, safe (closed chamber furnace with safety) and environmentfriendly. It is easy to operate and needs less maintenance, Gulati said.On an average each body requires over 400 kg of wood worth over Rs 1,000 for cremation. Thus about 2.40 million tonnes of wood is consumed in cremations annually.Biomassbased gasifier application in crematoria will not only drastically cut down wood consumption, the system is also socially acceptable since the body will be burnt in flames from producer gas, Gulati said.Cremation Facility : The facility consists of cremation bed fixed on a moving trolley. The burner is fitted to one end of a fixed dome with refractory lining inside. The body will be kept on the trolley bed and rituals if any, can be completed before pushing the trolley with the body into the fixed dome. The dome contains a pair of entry doors and after pushing the trolley inside, the doors will be closed.A wood gasifier is used for generation of gas and supplied to the special burner.Gas produced by the burning of wooden chips (known as solid fuel) would be the source of energy for the burners.A temperature of around 900 degree Celsius is attained inside the chamber. This high temperature flame will burn the body very fast.
