CHENNAI: The Chennai Trade Centre’s convention hall was bursting at the seams, with a 7,000 strong gathering for the finale of Diabetes Fest - 2011. A four month long saga of competitions, aimed at creating diabetes awareness among Chennai’s children, the event was a huge success for the organisers Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Speciality Centre (DMDSC). There were 4,500 school children and parents gathered, as the results of a series of competitions were announced and the winners awarded.Former Pakistan Cricket Captain Wasim Akram was present and shared his experience with diabetes, and the challenges of living with it as a sportsperson. “I have lived with diabetes from the age of 29 but this is the first time that I am coming to speak about my experience and I appreciate what Dr Mohan’s centre is doing here,” he said.Also present were cricketer Laxmipathy Balaji, actors Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Prasanna and Revathy. They also distributed prizes and spoke about their trysts with the non-communicable disease.With 111 schools and 30 colleges participating, the overall school shield was taken by PSBB High School while the overall college shield was taken by MOP Vaishnav College for Women.
