Almost all shops and business downed their shutters on Monday in Gudalur and Pandalur, in response to the bandh call given by various Pro-Eeelam Tamil outfits to protest against the training being given to Sri Lankan military officials in nearby Wellington.
Some 30 persons, belonging to Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, MDMK and PMK, were arrested, for allegedly forcing the shopkeepers to down the shutters, the police said.
Nearly 2,000 shops in these towns, about 70 KMs from Udhagamandalam were closed, wearing a deserted look in the area, otherwise busy with tourist activities. About 1,500 autorichskaws, taxies and jeeps remained off the roads in support of the call, they said.
