KOCHI: The Shipping Ministry on Thursday ordered an inquiry into the incident in which two fishermen died in the firing by an Italian merchant vessel off Kerala coast. The ministry has entrusted the Directorate General of Shipping with the responsibility of carrying out the investigation. M P John, Principal Officer of the Mercantile Marine Department in Kochi, will carry out the preliminary probe in this regard.“The MMD used to carry out its investigation into such incidents. So far we are under the impression that it was a case of mistaken identity. The security personnel onboard the ship must have mistook them for pirates and opened fire. According to available information, the vessel has been booked by the Coast Guard and a probe is on,” M P John said.
